La lêche-vitrine

By contemporary inspirational standards, this ranks UP THERE! Ok, its friggin hard to pull off on my own, without a partner for support and exchange... but I'm gonna give it a shot. A short shot.

I'm not gonna shop for a month.
No new clothes.
No movies. Rented or otherwise.
No eating out.
For the time being, i shall have to remain content with la lêche-vitrine (French for window shopping, literally translates to "licking window shops").

Btw, are books and hair-cuts necessities? and waxing and auto rickshaw rides?

On a related note, my recent days of penury have seen an admirable return to college-time frugality. Its much fun to watch the accounts get lean and mean just as its painful to leave that perfectly fitting black skirt that snugly makes up for the bulges. And yes, I am very much a liability of a friend. Innocent friends magnanimously offer to let me decide the dinner place, while i graciously let them take the cheque. Some even suggest that its the least they can do. Bless them, angels!

Last i checked, I owed a total of Rs. 766.70 in various debts to close and far friends. Yeah ok, you can leave a comment if i owe you, but no fake promisory notes will be entertained.

yah? You better have a receipt to support your claim, monsieur; a word given will not work as substitute proof of payment.

Philosophically, occassional abstention can be beneficial...

If you know, like the voluntary rigours Ayyappa devottees inflicts on self before heading to Sabarimala...

umm, would I look really stupid asking what kinda rigours they inflict on themselves? (are we talking of people who wear all black and go without footwear for a while?)

Not at all...

Yep. But unfortunately no many know the philosophical reasons. Almost all mix it with religious fervour. I think abstention is there for a long time almost in all cultures. But it becomes easy if you mix it with religion so that a common (unintelligent) man will follow it with blind faith successfully. Its something like "you dont know what fruit you are eating, nor do you know how it tastes, but anyway the fruit is in your stomach and given you energy."

No non-veg, no shaving, no smoking, no booze, and get this: no sex.

My dad, president of the local Ayappa temple management committee numerous times, has been going to the Sabarimala every year for heaven knows how long.

Mind you, women who have reached puberty are not allowed at all, unless they have reached menopause. Otherwise you are considered "impure". Bah!

It's good to be an atheist. ;)

scumbags! one of those things I hate abt being born a Hindu - male dominated pantheon of schmuks and their chamchaas. But as much as I want, I cant be an atheist...sigh, I even tried to delude myself and failed miserably.

Spend some more time with me, and I will turn you to the Dark Side. ;)

(I used to be a very religious kid, so I know how I changed.)
