Phew! Some other news please...

So. Its ceasefire. Like a belated birthday wish, that arrives in true melancholic lyricism of a Shakespearan tragedy. Minus the finality.

After an eleventh hour huff-n-puff effort to bomb each other black and blue, it was conclusively decided that they had bombed each other into, well, a darker shade of black and blue. Frankly, atleast the Hezbollah was getting what it said it wanted - Israeli lives. More or less.

But 34 days and several dead children later, its amusing to watch Israel chase the Hezbollah ass into the Latini River, barely 15 miles north of the border, like anyone who doesnt run out of his already devastated house must surely have Hezbollah lineage. Further, Israel bravely promises to maintain its air and sea blockade on Lebanon to prevent re-supply of Hezbollah. With more than 220 (totally 4000) rockets having found their fiery asses burried into Israeli soil on the last day, I can almost hear the Nasarallah rap.

Bomb out your muthafuggin arse yeh yeh yeh
While you screw my sistah Pristine,
This aint no stinking funny maan,
coz i'm gonna bomb out you sodding jews clean
.

To be fair, the Israelis left enough leaflets to rehabilitate the ruined paper recycling industry in Beirut. If anyone bothers to read them, they'll understand that Hezbollah had brought the people of Lebanon "to the edge of the abyss" and brought only "destruction, displacement and death." and that the Israelis could return "with all necessary might." Was this supposed to be funny or what?

The Lebanese, if not the Hezbollah, have plenty to laugh abt, though. Unifil(which suspiciously rhymes with some baby powder, i just cant recall which) and the Lebanese army will now achieve what the Israelis, half-witted and hot-blooded, could not do with their shiny stars-n-stripes balls of gunpowder. And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air...tra la la...

Just out of curiosity... Why are so many people concerned when two distant countries are fighting their arses off? Ok forget about the bad things that both Hezbollah and Israel did/are doing but apart from that why bother when it's not affecting our lives? Why is there not so much press and concern when a war breaks out in Africa, which is far more deadlier and long lasting than this one month affairs?

looks like I'm in for a beating, but I really don't care

Ahh, finally... someone who obviously cares more for the bird population in Bandipur than the primate population in Gaza :) Frankly, I dont give two friggin hoots abt who beats the shit out of whom. And it wouldnt change radically, if the war happened in Africa or even Bangladesh, for that matter. I'm glad its off the air waves - the stench was getting hard to bear.

Perhaps because this war ran the danger of having repurcussions far beyond the area in which it was fought, perhaps because it was viewed as a proxy war between the world's only remaining superpower and the one nation that has consistently defied it, perhaps because oil is involved.
Let there be war in Nigeria with it's oil wells and the world will notice. Rwanda, Burundi and Darfur, the outside world doesn't care as much.

Or perhaps it's just because you live in that superpower nation and we don't... Or perhaps it's just because this world is full of aggressive apes in powerful positions... Or perhaps the medieval crusades never really ended... Or perhaps this world is just destined to have wars as long as there is life.

War will come to where we are one day no matter what - that's how it's been through history and that's how it will be and I'd say spending time on something more peaceful till that day is better than thinking of the "what if" possibilities... it's just like thinking of senility now and investing time in researching on old-age homes, toilet kits, walking sticks and burial grounds. Useless and an absolute waster of precious time. There is much joy in this world than what those business oriented newspapers and news channels broadcast.

It's quite irrelevant where I live. The fact that a superpower is involved implies it's not a localized event anymore.

To completely ignore war simply because it's inevitable is naive, especially when said war has the potential to mushroom into something that radically affects everyone's lives worldwide. How much ever one dislikes it, we don't lead lives isolated from the rest of the world.

And why is that so? Why would someone in Papua New Guinea even be worried about this? Or even in the remote Nicobar islands? Do they know about the existence of Israel and the US of A and the great Ayatollahs and Bushes? Screw development and information - I'd rather live in their tribal world any day than worrying about becoming nuclear waste and watching bombs and killings and murders and politcal dramas and fake speeches and false friendships. Being naive sometimes is more peaceful and joyful than living with all the frills of developed lifestyles.

I think this post was more related to the exagerated coverage of bloody news, not total non-coverage. It's good to be informed, but not stuffed with templated articles day after day, which apparently some folks like - but not me. For me, I'd rather see this news on page 10 or something like that and gradually move up to page 1 if India's getting close to being involved or affected.

That's a fair point.
We are all however at fault if the media fixates on the gory details of war. If we as the audience weren't as fascinated with violence, the media would have no incentive to deluge us with such excessive coverage.

As myopic as it may sound, some of us identify an near identical situation back home, though with several times lower stakes. A regional superpower and a nation that consistently defies it. The absence of oil doesnt exactly make the situation inconsequential to the world.

So while we silently play the waiting game at our own borders, how much do u think we care for someone else's border or proxy war.

I don't get it. You say we shouldn't care about wars elsewhere in the world, wars whose consequences almost certainly will affect us, because we choose not to get into one at our borders?
We probably don't and shouldn't care as much about the Middle East, but it isn't entirely irrelevant. The amount of coverage the war received in the media might be disproportionately excessive but that I once again attribute to morbid love of violence.

I still haven't received the Internet that you sent. Couple of my Nigerian friends also require your a/c no. Please pass on your a/c ASAP.

If you still aren't clear about Internets and Interwebs, please allow Senator Ted Stevens to explain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DClkE64nFDY
